What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis to bring about therapeutic changes.  Hypnotherapy is a very safe, natural process during which the client is always in control of themselves; never asleep; fully aware of their surroundings and will never say or do anything which is contrary to their moral values or beliefs.

The Royal Society for Medicine, one of the oldest medical societies in the world, calls Hypnotherapy an “Allied Profression” and has a “Hypnosis and Psychosomatic Medicine” section. We have all seen the antics of the “Stage Hypnotist” whose sole aim is to provide entertainment by creating a situation where people can demonstrate their exhibitionist urges.  Hypnotherapy consists of harnessing the power of Hypnosis for the benefit of the client; to enable them to make beneficial changes to their life.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years and there are descriptions of “Sleep temples” or similar places in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Hindu writings.  Hypnosis is a natural state that many people experience many times every day. People who are day dreaming or who become so engrossed in a book, movie or TV programme such that they lose touch with the things going on around them are in a trance state. Unfortunately, it may not be a constructive trance and many “preoccupied” people are often imagining the negative aspects of events coming up in their future (worrying).

In a therapeutic setting, a constructive, positive state is created by a skilled hypnotherapist which can promote positive changes in the way that people experience their lives enabling them to resolve situations and behaviours which are rooted in their past, change the way they do things now, and give them a positive, attractive, compelling future.

Are there different types of Hypnotherapy?

There are several different descriptors of types of Hypnotherapy including:

Suggestion Therapy, Analytical Hypnotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Outcome Focussed Hypnotherapy, Person Centred Hypnotherapy, Holistic Hypnotherapy, Ericksonian Hypnotherapy etc. Many of these share common themes or practises.

The Hypnotherapy practised by Chris and Elizabeth is a Person Centred (Holistic) Therapy.  This aims to treat the whole person and not just the presenting symptoms. The therapy is aimed at the needs of the client. As every person is unique, so every person has different needs and these individual needs are taken into account in their approach to therapy.  All of the above elements are employed as appropriate to the client.

Chris and Elizabeth are also Practitioners of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which is a form of “conversational” Hypnotherapy carried out without the need for formal trance.  This is a very powerful system for change, motivation, confidence building, learning, focussing and resolving negative behaviours.

What can I expect to happen?

Initially, we ask all prospective clients to come along for an initial consultation. This consultation is free, takes about 30 minutes, and has no obligation on either part. This enables us to meet face to face and discuss your needs and concerns prior to the commencement of any work.  At this consultation, we will be able to give you some estimate of how many sessions you will need. This is just an estimate as every client is special and has their own unique needs.  A Spouse/partner or friend is very welcome to accompany you to this initial consultation if you wish.

What does Hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is a state where your attention is directed inwardly into your own body.  You will be guided into a state where your body and mind aregently relaxed. Although it might appear to an observer that you could be asleep, the reality is that you will be fully conscious and in total control throughout the process.  Whilst in this introspective state, the part of your mind which controls your habits and behaviours becomes more receptive to positive change while the intelligent part of your mind is deflected to allow the positive change to take place.

What is it like to “go under”?

Although it can be used as a means of controlling the sensations of pain, hypnosis is not an anaesthetic.  You do not “go under.”  You remain aware at all times.  Hypnosis is a state that you “enter” of your own choosing rather than a state that takes control of you.  The skill of the hypnotherapist is used in guiding you into a positive and comfortable trance state.
